Specialized inert gas and Novec extinguishing solutions for protecting servers and critical IT equipment.
Why water is not used
In a data center, water would destroy the very equipment it is trying to protect. The standard solution is extinguishing with gaseous agents, which put out the fire without residue and without affecting equipment that is under voltage.
Extinguishing agents for IT spaces
The most widely used solutions are inert gases and clean chemical agents:
- IG-541 / IG-100 (inert gases) - reduce the oxygen concentration below the combustion threshold; safe for personnel
- Novec 1230 / FK-5-1-12 - clean chemical agent with rapid extinguishing and a small storage footprint
- HFC-227ea (FM-200) - an established solution, currently being phased out for environmental reasons
Early detection - the key to protection
Gas extinguishing is always preceded by high-sensitivity detection. Aspirating smoke detection systems (VESDA) continuously sample the air and detect smoke particles well ahead of conventional detectors, allowing intervention before the fire develops.
Proper design also includes sealing the enclosure, overpressure dampers, and the timing sequence for evacuating personnel before discharge.
